SASKATOON – Greg Walen, QC, a partner with Scharfstein Gibbings Walen & Fisher LLP, has been selected as the recipient for the CBA Saskatchewan 2015 Distinguished Service Award. Greg specializes in the practice of family law, with over 35 years of experience in the legal field.

Greg has been involved with the Saskatchewan Branch of the Canadian Bar Association for over 20 years, currently serving as a Mid-Winter Meeting Planning Committee member. In previous capacities, Greg served as Vice-Chair and Chair for the Family Law North section, along with presenting at various continuing legal education sessions at the Branch’s annual Mid-Winter Meeting. Greg has also actively worked with various legal organizations across the province including the Law Society of Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Lawyers Insurance Association, University of Saskatchewan’s College of Law, Saskatchewan Legal Aid Commission and Saskatchewan Trial Lawyers Association.

Paul Korpan, QC, a partner with Kanuka Thuringer LLP, expressed that his colleague’s “contribution to the education of the legal profession generally is what sets him apart. He has authored more papers and presented at more Continuing Legal Education seminars in Saskatchewan than any other academic or practitioner in the area of family law.” As a Bencher with the Law Society of Saskatchewan, Greg played a significant role in developing continuing legal education programs for the organization, including the rollout of the mandatory Continuing Legal Education program.

The Distinguished Service Award was created by the Branch to recognize the outstanding contributions and achievements of a CBA Saskatchewan member. Awarded individuals have impacted the legal profession in Saskatchewan; jurisprudence in Saskatchewan or Canada; the law and/or development of law in Saskatchewan; or law-related achievements for the benefit of residents of Saskatchewan. All nominations are reviewed by the CBA Saskatchewan Awards Committee.

The 2015 Distinguished Service Award will be presented at the Branch’s annual Mid-Winter Meeting Awards Luncheon, on February 6th. The Awards Luncheon will take place at the Delta Bessborough Hotel, 12:00pm, in the Adam Ballroom.
